Close to the horse is a layer of material containing Welltex®, a unique textile technology that gives the fabric the ability to absorb and emit the horse's body heat in the form of infrared energy (FIR). FIR is well known for stimulating blood circulation and can exert a therapeutic effect on both muscles and joints.

The inside of a Welltex® saddle pad contains a moisture-wicking and quick-drying fabric with a waffled structure. We call the material Power Waffle, because it provides the most powerful reflection of FIR of all our materials. The properties of this waffle fabric are due to a very high content of minerals, which are fused into the fabric’s threads during the manufacturing process.

However, the minerals do not affect any other properties of the functional material. It still feels like a soft and comfortable fabric, and it does not retain heat or moisture. On the contrary: the fabric is highly breathable, and because of the structure being three-dimensional, it creates very small air pockets that allow air to circulate.

The surface area is also larger than that of a regular, plain fabric. This allows the fabric to carry more of the Welltex® minerals, enhancing the effect. The minerals are permanently attached to the fabric and therefore cannot be washed out or worn away. This means that the effect remains for the entire life span of the saddle pad.

What is the effect of Welltex® in a saddle pad?

The ability to reflect infrared light is described as the emissivity of a substance. The minerals used in our textiles have high emissivity values. They effectively absorb and emit the long-wave infrared energy radiated from the body - along with that emitted from the minerals themselves when heated by body heat.

When FIR penetrates the tissues, it affects them in various ways, including by increasing blood flow. The effect can be observed, but the mechanism behind it is still unclear - although several possible explanations have been put forward. In all cases, infrared energy acts at the molecular level, with one theory suggesting that infrared energy upregulates the expression of an enzyme in the walls of blood vessels. This enzyme in turn increases the production of nitric oxide (NO) - the signalling molecule the body uses to dilate blood vessels and increase blood flow. The discovery of NO and its function as a signalling molecule in the body was rewarded with the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1998.

Increased blood flow, in turn, provides tissues with a surge of oxygen and nutrients, as well as supports the body's own healing processes. The result is often perceived as soothing, beneficial and therapeutic - especially for tired muscles and stiff joints.

Haze Collection - understated, elegant and stylish

All saddle pads in the Haze collection feature a matte finish, with a soft faux fur brim at the front. The saddle pads are available for both jumping and dressage, in several muted colour tones – brown melange, grey melange or beige. The latest addition is matt black, bordered with a rose gold cord and adorned with a stylish metal emblem on the side.

Minerals fused into the threads of the material reflect the infrared energy naturally emitted by the body - giving the familiar Back on Track effect.

This saddle pad is both stylish and practical! It has a shiny, glossy finish and is bordered with a cord in our signature colour; champagne. Our emblem has been incorporated into the quilting pattern, in the form of small champagne-coloured, embroidered wings. Available for both jumping and dressage, in a variety of beautiful colours.
