The products in our dog range are designed to enhance both quality of life and enjoyment of life in dogs of all ages. They are enhanced with our Welltex® and Iontex® textile technologies, which promotes blood flow to muscles, relieve joint discomfort and help increase mobility. They can therefore be particularly helpful for a dog suffering from osteoarthritis.

We are happy to give our pets the opportunity to live long, comfortable lives together with us. But both increased longevity and the very common problem of obesity also put them, like us, at greater risk of developing osteoarthritis.

If you suspect that your dog is suffering from osteoarthritis or appears to be in any kind of pain, the cause should be investigated by a vet. Many conditions can be treated with relatively simple remedies if you are aware of what is causing them. By making everyday life easier for your dog, you can alleviate the symptoms of osteoarthritis and improve its well-being, so that it can continue to lead a rich and active life.

You know best if your dog is in pain

Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease in humans and is also common in animals. The disease causes the cartilage in joints to break down, leading to stiff, painful and inflamed joints. However, painful conditions in dogs are not always obvious, and they, like other animals, may respond by masking the symptoms as best they can. But there are usually signs. The person who can best interpret these signs is, of course, the person who knows the dog best - you, the dog owner. You know how your dog tends to move and you know how it expresses its emotions. Hence; you have the necessary experience to notice even the smallest changes in behaviour, appetite, mood or movement patterns. That is how vague the expression of ill health and disease can be in dogs.

Sometimes the dog will instead act out; bark excessively or become aggressive. Such typical problem behaviours may in fact be due to feelings of illness and untreated pain. Especially if the behaviour represents a clear change in the dog's normal personality.

A dog with osteoarthritis needs its exercise

Our pets' natural reactions to joint pain are mainly to want to do less of what hurts. Dogs are reluctant to get out of bed, they avoid movement; they no longer seem to enjoy long walks and intense play and exercise sessions. They don't know why they are in pain, so they just try to live with it as best they can. Dogs, and cats in particular, even tend to do their best to actively hide pain and illness.

However, the animals' avoidance strategies can lead to worsening arthritis and muscle atrophy. This causes the joints to become even more unstable or misaligned, which in turn further aggravates the condition. We now know that movement should be encouraged, particularly in the earliest stages of the disease. The cartilage in the joints is nourished when the joints are used and pressure is put on them. Not only that, but the muscles around the joints are strengthened, which both relieves and stabilises them.

Back on Track is there for your dog

Over the years, Back on Track has developed numerous dog products that reflect the portion of the dog's body heat that is emitted in the form of far infrared energy (FIR). This particular part of the spectrum can have a positive effect on both humans and animals, by stimulating blood flow and exert a therapeutic effect deep in the tissues.

Warm, well-supplied muscles are soft and flexible, making it easier to move. Our dog blankets embrace the dog's body from neck to tail with this beneficial effect. At the same time, our joint covers support the joints and contribute to an increased sense of stability.

Osteoarthritis-adapt your dog's home!

You can make life easier for a dog with osteoarthritis by helping it avoid the movements that seem painful. For example, food and water bowls can be placed higher than the floor. The dog may also need something to step on to get on the sofa or into the car. To prevent the dog from slipping on smooth floors, a rug can be placed on top. This makes the dog feel safer and also reduces the risk of injury. Our therapeutic dog socks wrap the legs and paws with Welltex® and have silicone grips underneath.

At the same time, moderate exercise on a suitable surface - preferably often, but for a shorter period of time - can reduce the damage caused by osteoarthritis.

Our Dog Braces and Supports - as well as our Dog Coats with Welltex® or Iontex® - can act as a beneficial and comfortable complement. Our thin Mesh Coats can be used indoors all year round and around the clock. Our Rain- and outdoor coats all have a Welltex® or Iontex® lining and will also help your dog stay warm in cooler temperatures.

A soft bed with Welltex® can also promote recovery during rest and sleep, by harnessing and reflecting the far infrared energy (FIR) generated by the dog's own body heat.
